Internal steel columns are often extended through the floor slab and insulation at the base of the building shell. This produces a thermal bridge and point transmittance (heat loss) at the steel column base in low-temperature buildings like freezer rooms and cold storage facilities. Exterior columns that support floors or roof overhangs are similarly affected. The thermal bridging created by the column to roof connection disrupts the continuous insulation, causing heat loss.
