Putative peptide YY-3 (PYY3) is described as a gut protein and it is released from the colon and ileum. The peptide fragment is secreted by intestinal L cells when expose to food that has crossed the blood-brain barrier. It binds to the Y2 receptor in the VMH, the activation of this receptor is known to decrease in the levels of NPY mRNA in neurons of the orexigenic arm.
