The versatility of gabions

26-10-2023

What are gabions? A gabion is a cage or retaining wall made from mesh filled with rocks, concrete, or sometimes sand and soil for use in civil engineering, road building, and military applications. Gabions can be used for massive structures or small-scale constructions and, because they look natural and organic, they fit well into the environment and therefore mesh gabions are often used as decorative elements in urban spaces, garden design, and landscaping. Example of gabion applications The most popular use of gabions in civil engineering is to stabilize riverbanks or slopes against erosion. Other applications include retaining walls, noise barriers, temporary flood walls or sediment filtration. They can also be used to direct the force of floodwater around a vulnerable structure. Gabion walls are generally battered (angled back towards the slope), or stepped back with the slope, instead of stacked vertically. Are gabions easy to fit? Gabions are easy to install and can be put together very quickly, they do not usually require any concrete foundation to support them. Gabion require little to no maintenance, are very long lasting and can be more cost effective and easier to install and manoeuvre than concrete or stone blocks. What can be used to fill gabions? Which material is used to fill gabion baskets will be determined by its final application. However, they can be filled with pretty much anything, stones, rocks, bricks and sand or logs, empty bottles, gravel etc. How long will gabions last? How long gabions will last depends on the lifespan of the wire, not on the contents of the basket. The structure will fail when the wire fails. Galvanised steel wire is the most common material used in the construction of gabions, but PVC-coated and stainless steel wire are also used. PVC-coated galvanised gabions will last for many years. Our gabion baskets Our welded mesh gabion baskets offer flexibility and aesthetics and are suitable for indoor and outdoor applications. They are available as flat packs and are made of 3mm galvanised steel wire, capable or resisting flood water, ensuring durability and strength. They can be rapidly installed keep their shape and are free from bulges and depressions, fitting easily against walls. Our gabion baskets are supplied flat pack for ease of transportation to final location.
