Real Grass vs. Artificial Grass: Settling the Debate

03-06-2020

Sales of artificial grass for domestic garden use continue to increase year by year, as does the environmental friendliness of new technologies in the field. Since artificial lawns were first invented in the 1960s, both residential and commercial use (notably for sports stadia and training grounds) has become more widespread. Forever Green Lawns is part of the movement to raise awareness of its benefits. Since our launch in 2005, we have become one of the UK’s leading artificial grass and installation specialists. Our viewpoint is therefore a little biased but the below points are objective facts to compare fairly the arguments for real and artificial grass. Arguments for Real Grass Firstly, some argue that real grass is better looking aesthetically. This may resonate with some who seek a truly natural appearance and think artificial lawns just don’t offer that. However, artificial grass has come along way in terms of its appearance so this may be an outdated way of thinking. It also indulges a very British pastime of garden maintenance so, where some people see mowing, weeding etc. as an inconvenience, we acknowledge this, in fact, may be deemed an enjoyable way to spend a day. Some also say that real grass may be more beneficial for the environment. 2,500sqft of natural lawn – a mid-sized garden – can provide enough oxygen for a family of 4. Real grass and natural gardens generally have also been proven to improve the owners’ sense of wellbeing and can be a great setting to alleviate the stresses of life. Whilst new technologies mean artificial alternatives bring their own environmental benefits such as water preservation and less harmful emissions, the ‘grass’ is better in this regard in a real lawn. This is because it absorbs more carbon from the surrounding air and therefore facilitates a more balanced ecological system for humans, wildlife and plants alike. Arguments for Artificial Grass The overwhelming standout benefit to artificial lawns is efficiency – in terms of long-term savings, ongoing maintenance and time. We have discussed the labour savings in an earlier blog – this principally includes (or rather doesn’t include!) mowing, watering bald patches, trimming edges and clearing up loose cuttings. No longer would you need to set aside half a weekend to preserve your garden’s beauty. Furthermore, whilst real grass is initially cheaper to install, the lifespan of quality artificial lawns means the saving is ultimately offset, plus you won’t need to invest in pesticides, garden tools, lawnmowers. These secondary savings should not be overlooked and there is even some residual environmental benefit by reducing water usage. Artificial grass lawns are more resilient to adverse weather conditions and won’t turn to sludgy mud; heavy footfall at your summer barbecue will not wear down the lawn or change its colour to unsightly browns; and, should you have pets, any unfortunate leavings can be cleared up without any trace. There is also greater flexibility with the surface artificial lawn can be laid upon. They can be laid directly on to hard surfaces like concrete so you won’t need to spend time digging up patios or raking soil as would be required for a real grass lawn. Conclusion The realistic look and environmental friendliness of artificial grass lawns is only going to improve further over the next few years but whichever decision you decide is right, it should be based on bespoke factors. Think: • What will my lawn be used primarily for? • Can I dedicate the time to maintaining a real grass lawn? • What would suit the overall look of my garden? Or, perhaps make it an even simpler choice: do I want an easier life?!
