What are Scalpings?

Road scalpings or road planings are produced as a result of the surface layer of a tarmac footpath or road being removed by a cold milling machine. These are low-cost aggregates that offer environmental advantages. Not only are road scalpings made of bitumen which is a natural resource but also, by using scalpings, waste is minimised. Plus, road scalpings also reduce pressure on quarried aggregate stocks. What are scalpings called? Scalpings are also known as road planings, road scrapings, tarmac chippings, crushed asphalt, tarmac scalpings and crushed tarmac. Are scalpings the same as type 1? Type 1 MOT and scalpings are not the same. Scalpings have higher fines content and, in turn, less load bearing capability. Type 1 MOT generally consists of granite, basalt, limestone or gritstone crushed that can be easily compacted and have excellent load bearing capabilities. What are scalpings made of? Scalpings are made of the surface layer of tarmac surfaces. Are scalpings permeable? Scalpings are not permeable once they have been laid for a while. So, we do not recommend them for drainage purposes or sub-bases. What are scalpings used for? These aggregates can be used for hard standings, driveways, patios, building sub-bases, haul roads, paths, highways and farm tracks. To note: Due to their high fines content, road planings are not suitable to be used as backfill for draining trenches.
