How to Transform Your House with VELCRO? Brand Tape
30-11-2023
When it comes to home DIY, there are a few miracle materials that make life so much easier – be it Blu Tack, utility hooks or double-sided sticky tape. Another DIY saviour that is often overlooked is hook and loop, the most well-known brand of which being VELCROⓇ.
VELCROⓇ Brand tape has a number of versatile uses that can be incredibly convenient – especially throughout the home. Read our extensive guide below as we list all the ways you can use VELCROⓇ Brand tape in all the rooms in your home.
What is Adhesive VELCROⓇ Brand Tape?
VELCROⓇ Brand tape, though often confused as being the name for this type of fastening itself, is a type of hook and loop fastening. As the name suggests, hook and loop consists of two separate parts, one which consists of tiny rough hooks, the other of many soft fibrous loops. The hooks hook themselves around these loops, thus creating a fastening.
Though relatively easy to fasten and unfasten when needing to, hook and loop can be incredibly unyielding when in use, with the ability to hold substantial weights. Furthermore, it comes in various shapes, sizes and types, allowing it to be used for a wide range of applications, as we’ll go on to discuss below.
Room by Room Uses for Heavy Duty VELCROⓇ Brand Tape
Living Room
Rugs
If you have a hardwood or linoleum floor in your living room, then you may also have a rug (or rugs) either in front of your seating areas to act as soft, warm underfooting, or perhaps a large mug in the centre of your room or under your coffee table as decoration. Either way, as practical and aesthetically pleasing as rugs are, they can be prone to slipping.
This is especially an issue if you have pets or children, who often enjoy a little run around and could slip on a rug whilst doing so, due to the lack of friction between the underneath of the rug and the smooth flooring. Using adhesive VELCROⓇ tape, you can add a strip along the edges, or even put a small strip in each corner of the underneath of your rug, then attaching the other side of the tape to the floor so that the two can stick together firmly.
This will stop your rug(s) from slipping, yet can still be easily removed if need be for cleaning.
Cables
If we were to place a bet, we’d be pretty certain that there are all kinds of cables tangled behind your telly. From the telly itself to your TV box to your broadband hub, the cables often tangle together and it can be hard to decipher which cable leads to which device – not to mention, it looks a mess.
An easy way to tidy them up is using VELCROⓇ cable ties, which, unlike normal cable ties, can be easily removed and reused. These will wrap around the cables and keep them neat, secure and looking tidy.
Remote Controls
We’ve all experienced that frustrating situation where someone’s misplaced the remote controls or they’ve been lost in the midst of the sofa somewhere. With the use of adhesive VELCROⓇ, never again do you need to experience the mystery of the missing remote.
By sticking a side of adhesive velcro to the underside of your remote and the corresponding side to the coffee table or whichever surface they typically live on, then you will be more inclined to stick them down where they belong. Likewise, they can’t be easily knocked off or picked up by little hands and carried away to somewhere they shouldn’t be.
Kitchen
Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are essential to have in every home, being able to detect and alert when there is either a fire or carbon monoxide leak that could pose a threat to you.
Carbon monoxide alarms must be installed in any room that contains a fixed combustion appliance (except gas cookers) such as boilers and ovens – though not directly next to these; though they don’t need to be fixed onto a wall, you may not have any shelving to place it on, in which case securing it to the wall with VELCROⓇ is an easy way to do so.
As for smoke detectors, these should not be used in the kitchen, as they can be set off by mistake from when you’re cooking, similarly they should be away from your bathroom so they aren’t accidentally set off by steam from hot showers. The best place for them is instead in hallways or adjoining rooms, and you should have one on each level of your home.
Using VELCROⓇ to adhere them to the wall or ceiling is a great alternative to screws or glue. Glue is bad to use since it can seep into the alarm and damage the system, while screws make it a pain to get the alarm down again should the batteries need replacing – neither of which are an issue when using VELCROⓇ.
Cupboard Storage
Everyone’s got that one cupboard they dread to go in, because as soon as you open it there are things falling out and trying to attack you (think broomsticks, feather dusters or even those handheld vacuum cleaners!). To stop this from happening, sticking a small piece of hook and loop to the handles of these, such as the VELCROⓇ Brand Circles, allows you to keep these staying in place inside your cupboards, without having to precariously prop them up or resort to installing hooks inside your cupboard.
Pet bowls
If you have pets, especially dogs, then you’re likely used to the sound of their food bowl being nudged along the floor as they lick every last inch of it just to be sure they haven’t missed a single crumb of food. Not only can this sound rather irritating, but it poses a trip hazard when their bowl isn’t where you expect it to be.
Securing it to the floor with a small piece of adhesive VELCROⓇ ensures that it will stay in the same place when they’re eating, allowing them to lick away to their heart’s content without the bowl making its way around the whole kitchen – all whilst being easy for you to still pick up and wash up once it’s done with.
Bedroom
Organising drawers
There’s something so satisfying about drawers that are neatly organised and tidy – perhaps it’s because things are actually where they belong and are convenient to reach when you need them, for once! Of course, sometimes a tidy drawer doesn’t always stay that way.
It could be that you have loose items that end up rolling around each time the drawer is opened or closed, or maybe you’ve even gone as far as having storage trays within your drawers, though these may also slide around if not a perfect fit. Thankfully, you can create the organised drawer of your dreams with the use of VELCROⓇ.
You simply need to secure your trays to the bottom of your drawers with a small piece of adhesive VELCROⓇ, or wrap a strip of VELCROⓇ around any loose items to stop them from rolling around everywhere.
Fixing clothes
Being a fastening that most people first associate with clothing, this is yet another way VELCROⓇ can be used in the home. If you have any clothes that are missing a button or gape slightly more than you’d like, then using iron-on or sew-on VELCROⓇ can be a discreet way to fix these.
Decor
Something that renters especially struggle with is finding ways to hang up decor in their homes without hammering nails into the walls or using Blu Tack (which can peel away paint), as this is usually stated as being not allowed in their contract. Should you want to hang artwork on your walls or photos to make your home feel more personalised to you and, well, homely, then VELCROⓇ is an ideal solution.
Adhesive VELCROⓇ strips come in different sizes and are strong enough to hold items on a wall without falling (assuming it has been applied correctly). The upside of using this is that it won’t leave holes in the wall like drilling screws in does, nor does it peel the paint away upon removal if removed properly – although, a patch test is always recommended to check for this first, just in case.
Applying VELCROⓇ Correctly
Adhesive VELCROⓇ uses heavy duty double sided tape, which is what makes it so convenient to use. However, it must still be used correctly in order to get the best performance from it. Here are our top tips for applying VELCROⓇ strips:
Always clean and dry the surfaces you will be applying the adhesive to, since adhesive doesn’t stick well to dirty or wet surfaces. Any multi-surface cleaner should be fine to use to do this.
Once you’ve peeled off the backing, try not to touch the adhesive, as any dirt or grease from your fingers can affect how well it sticks.
When hanging something on the wall or ceiling, wait 24 hours before attaching the VELCROⓇ strips together. This will give them time to achieve the strongest adhesion, so that they can better hold the weight of the corresponding item that you are wanting to secure into place.
