Naylor Industries support local Sculptress Natalie Woodcock

02-02-2023

Here at Naylor, we’re always up for a challenge and on this occasion, it was no exception! Naylor were approached by local Sculptress Natalie Woodcock. Natalie was selected from over 200 artists in the Yorkshire region via an Open Call by one of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park’s patrons who wanted an Art Work- made in Yorkshire- for their new home. Naylor assisted with this project by providing space in their workshop to construct the sculpture, access to one of their large kilns and use of their brick clay which would be able to survive outdoor temperature changes and weathering. The Naylor team also helped with technical advice on material and the structural aspects of building with clay. CEO Edward Naylor commented “The idea of doing a sculpture in Yorkshire ticked a lot of boxes – clay runs deep in our veins and when we were approached to see if we wanted to contribute, we said “Absolutely, it’s completely our bag” The project lasted several months and each section needed to be slab built by hand, which was a challenge given the intention of a finished structure up to 1.5m high. Various tests were also undertaken using different decorating slips and thicknesses – so it took a few attempts to get the final desired size, design, and effect! Once all the trials had been undertaken it was finally time to prepare all the final components to be dried and fired in our Kiln. Success! The final stage was for Natalie and her team to arrange installation in the final location…..and I’m sure you’ll agree this looks amazing.
