Project - Hantergantick Cottage, Cornwall

When our clients bought the 300 year old cottage it was damp, dark, mouldy and in a state of disrepair. Attached to the cottage was a rubble stone built piggery, a 1970’s single story extension and small north facing lean-to. Works included complete upgrade and renovation of the cottage, converting the piggery into a light and airy pool room with Endless Swimming Pool and passive solar sun space, 1st floor extension and replacement lean-to. These had to be very sympathetic and respectful to the existing cottage. The project also included a small detached barn conversion. The farmhouse and barn are heated with independent water source heat pumps via boreholes and wood burners. Heating consists of underfloor heating and radiators. Cooking is via a multi-fuel stove. Ventilation and heat recovery systems bring fresh air into each room. The extension and replacement lean-to are built with breathable construction methods. Walls and roofs are insulated with sheep wool insulation and barn walls with insulating lime plaster. The cottage gross internal floor area including piggery is 230m2 and barn 57m2.
