Since Christmas I have been working on a high-rise project in London. The 16 story high office building is a fantastic learning curve for me, it may be a steep learning curve but for gaining experience this project is absolutely ideal. When working on a high-rise lining the steel in there are several jobs to do, some of these are beam level surveys to ensure that the steel is at the design level and remaining in tolerance. The way most big steel frame buildings are built is that the steel in tied in to one or several concrete cores. The steel joins to the core with a welded connection, or fin plate. It is the engineer’s responsibility to make sure the fin plate is in the correct location and level. I like working in London because it’s close enough to home to travel in a reasonable time and also because it provides lots of challenges, for example setting up in the street to do surveys. I’ve also done another elevation survey which was good because it helps prefect the technique for next time, making the whole process a lot easier, quicker and more efficient. Other than working on site I’m progressing with my course at college and the AutoCAD course I’m enrolled on. I find the college course very interesting and glad I’m doing it, I just need to keep focused on the goal at the end.
