Design Your Own Garden Gym so that You can Get Fit in 2024

17-09-2024

Every new year, many aim to get fit, but it's hard to stick to. A garden building gym ensures consistent workouts, perfect for fitness enthusiasts seeking convenience and privacy.

1. Choosing the Right Location

In this comprehensive guide, we'll take you through the step-by-step process of designing your ideal home gym. From choosing the right location in your garden to selecting equipment and optimising the layout, you'll have all the information you need to transform your garden building into the perfect fitness space.

Finding the Perfect Spot for Your Home Gym:

By evaluating your garden space with an initial site survey, we can help you to decide where the best location for your garden gym will be, depending on the size and shape of your garden.

Site clearance is a vital element of the process of successfully delivering a garden building that really works for you. We'll work with you at the design stage to select the right location for your new structure. Then we'll roll up our sleeves at your location and clear the site. We'll make sure it's ready for installation of the building and any other services and utilities.

2. Gym Design and Layout Planning

Garden Building Size and Style:

There is a lot to consider when looking at a home gym. The first and most crucial element is deciding what gym equipment you're going to need and the internal height required. Whilst all of our pre-designed rooms can make a great gym space, in some instances working within the 2.5 planning rule just won't work. Therefore we need to consider the positioning of the building or if planning permission needs to be sought.

Here at Bakers we have a wealth of knowledge and our show centre displays all the options for internal heights. If planning is required, there's no need to be concerned as we can handle that entire process for you as part of our complete package service.

Home Gym Setup and Layout:

The layout of home gyms can make a big difference. Strategically placing your cardio machines, yoga mats and weights can not only create a more enjoyable and smooth workout, but also motivate you to exercise regularly, compared to having a cramped, cluttered gym space that feels overcrowded.

3. Flooring and Insulation

Gym-Friendly Flooring & Bases:

With the knowledge of how you're going to use your gym, we can upgrade our steel and timber frame bases to ensure it can handle the additional weight as opposed to standard use. Most clients like to upgrade the laminate flooring to a wet room version so you never worry how hard you're working out. Through our partnership with motive8, we can also offer gym mats and protective flooring.

Insulation for Year Round Use:

At Bakers, we say that a garden room without insulation is really just a summer house. Without adequate insulation, your gym would be far too cold to use year round. Which is why our bespoke and pre-designed buildings are all fully insulated. Leaving you with one less thing to worry about as you focus on your fitness journey.

4. Lighting and Ventilation

Natural Lighting:

Keep your home gym feeling open and bright with natural light. By installing french doors, bi-fold doors, windows and skylights you can flood the room with stunning natural light. You can even opt for doors and windows with solar control glass to reduce glare from the sun.

Ventilation Solutions:

Making sure you have great ventilation and air circulation is crucial and will ensure we can design opening windows and fan light windows to maximise this effect. In most instances, clients also enjoy the addition of climate control units. Our air source heat pumps are super efficient and give you all the warmth you need in the winter as well as keeping you cool in the summer to create the perfect space for your workouts.

5. Types of Gym Equipment

Having a range of gym equipment keeps things interesting during your workouts and enables you to target different muscle groups, making for a satisfying workout every time.

Cardio Machines:

A treadmill, rowing machine, exercise bike, cross trainer and stair climber are all great options when it comes to a cardio machine.

Strength Training:

Having a range of weights will enable you to progress your workouts and continue to build strength and muscle. We can help fit hooks and anchor points for resistance and training bands.

6. Personalising Your Space

Technology and Entertainment:

We can install speakers when we build your garden gym and we highly recommend Sonos speakers, especially when the garden building is going to be a gym! We can also help you with the lighting, plug socket access, wifi connectivity and usability regarding sound and vision. We can even install floor sockets to avoid you tripping over power leads! Additionally, we can also help you mount a TV on the wall, which is great for following online workout classes.

Garden Gym Bars:

If you have the space, why not install a Baker's bar to use for protein shakes and healthy smoothies to really elevate your workout and home gym life? We can build a mini kitchen area with a sink, mini fridge and bar area, perfect for making your protein shakes and smoothies with family members or friends. Or use it for entertaining and leisure, making your garden gym completely versatile.

To further decorate your home gym you could also add plants, photos and other accessories to make your gym feel personalised and comfortable.

7. Storage and Organisation

Smart Storage Solutions:

There are so many options when it comes to storage solutions in your home gym. Think about how much space you have as well as what you'd like to be able to store and how. For example, you may need specialist gym equipment storage such as a dumbbell rack or barbell holder, or maybe you simply want somewhere to store yoga mats and towels, in which case you may just need some baskets or boxes for your storage. Smart storage is especially useful in a small home gym.

8. Safety and Maintenance

Safety Measures:

Ensure your space is clear and tidy, this goes hand in hand with having the right gym layout. The last thing you want is to finish a long workout and then trip over equipment or a machine because the room isn't organised.

Making sure your gym equipment is safe and works properly is another obvious but important step. Read any instructions before using new equipment and machines, and complete any necessary training or beginner classes so that you feel confident in what you're doing and you're doing it safely.
