What is it like to be an apprentice at Fernco?

12-02-2025

Attracting young talent is a challenge faced by businesses across the UK every day. Recognising this, Fernco continues to invest in the next generation by promoting apprenticeships across the company, providing young people with opportunities to develop their skills and build successful careers.

But what is life really like as a Fernco apprentice? Here, Jacob, Declan, and Abigail share their experiences, reflecting on their apprenticeship journey and how it has positioned them for future success.

Learning on the Job: Jacob’s Sales Apprenticeship

Jacob Pashley was Fernco’s first apprentice, joining straight after his A-Levels to complete a Level 4 Sales Apprenticeship. Since then, he has become a key member of the Fernco sales team and now works as an Area Sales Manager covering Yorkshire and the Humber, Lincolnshire, and Nottinghamshire.

"For me, the biggest benefit has been the hands-on learning. You can’t beat real-life experience, especially in sales. From day one, I’ve felt like a valued member of the business and was given real responsibilities, from meeting deadlines to delivering results. While challenging, this experience has massively boosted my confidence, and I love what I do. The skills I have learned during the course have been invaluable, but more importantly, the trust I’ve been given has been key. Fernco has been a fantastic place to learn and grow – long may it continue."

Kickstarting a Career in Marketing: Declan’s Journey

After completing a Graphic Design course at Rotherham College, Declan Taylor joined Fernco to kickstart a career in digital marketing. Now, more than a year later, he has successfully completed a Level 3 Apprenticeship and is continuing his professional development by studying for a Level 4 Marketing Executive qualification.

"When I joined Fernco, it was very much about starting a career. Like many people my age, I wasn’t entirely sure what I wanted to do, but I had a passion and pursued it. The apprenticeship was exactly what I needed—it allowed me to learn the principles of marketing and apply them in real-time. I’ve been given a variety of responsibilities and real ownership over my work, which has been crucial for my development.

I think that’s so important when you’re learning—it has helped me explore my strengths and weaknesses, making me much more well-rounded. As an apprentice, you’re not just shut away somewhere; you’re right in the thick of it. I’ve already worked on some incredibly rewarding projects, with even more exciting opportunities ahead this year. The mentoring I’ve received from the team has been amazing—I genuinely couldn’t have asked for a better place to learn."

Finding the Right Path: Abigail’s Accountancy Apprenticeship

Abigail Fletcher is Fernco’s most recent apprentice. She completed a Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship, gaining experience across various departments before deciding to specialise in accounts. Having completed her apprenticeship in June 2024, she has now secured a permanent role as a Trainee Accountant.

"My time at Fernco has been really interesting. I won’t lie—I never imagined myself working in a manufacturing environment, and it took me a while to fully understand what Fernco does! But I couldn’t be happier with how the last year has gone. Working across different departments has given me so much confidence, and I’ve learned so much from the people I’ve worked with.

In terms of my next steps, Fernco has been incredibly supportive in helping me choose the right path. At school, maths was always my strongest subject, and I’ve always thought accountancy would be a good fit. I’m so grateful to Fernco for giving me the opportunity to pursue this as a career. Being part of such a friendly and encouraging environment has been fantastic, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds."
