A versatile growing environment

When your contract customers include local authorities, corporate headquarters and major tourist attractions across the country, you have one chance each year to get it right. Baginton Nurseries has been growing high quality ornamental bedding plants, hanging baskets and planted containers for more than 30 years, and relies on the Keder greenhouse system to deliver a consistent growing environment, year after year.
“We first got a Keder greenhouse about six years ago, when we wanted to increase the area we had under cover to bring on young plants“explained Will Lamb, Managing Director. “The main factor in our decision was its versatility. We wanted a greenhouse system and growing environment in which we could grow different types of ornamental plants for different customers. We also liked the way we could extend our original Keder structure, by adding modules. We have now increased our covered growing area, and it is working well.”
Electric venting
“Airflow is important in indoor growing – too much or too little and the plants suffer. The Keder greenhouse enables us to use electrically operated vents, for both the roof and the sides. On a mild day, we can let the air in, but if it gets chilly, we can quickly close the vents and protect our tender plants. The Keder greenhouse provides a robust shelter from the strong south westerly winds we get here, too. To ensure a head start on production, we installed frost protection through a heating system. We leave the Keder greenhouse fallow over the winter, then plan our production, and start again in early spring. “
Baginton’s was one of the first nurseries in the UK to gain accreditation from the British Ornamental Plant Producers’ Certification scheme (BOPP) in 1997, and has continued to achieve the standard each year since. As an Accredited Nursery the company is committed to caring for the environment, and will continue to reduce its carbon footprint, and buy British, wherever possible.
Will Lamb concludes, “The Keder team ensured that the building process went very smoothly, and was completed quickly, with the minimum of disruption. These are practical long-lasting structures, and I have already recommended them to other professionals in the horticultural industry.”
