TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Every door set manufactured by Torterolo & Re is made to order and strictly to specification. The steel construction is basically the same following years of research but the dimensions vary; even the smallest variation in size or requirement can affect the strength of the security. High security is reliant on four factors that make them resistant to any form of forced entry: The Frame This is made of brake steel and sunk into the wall. The mainframe, which can be installed, is fixed to the subframe; the later is invisible in the structural opening once the mainframe has been attached to it. A range of frames is available to suit different aspects and applications. The Doors Doors are made of two galvanised steel sheets with internal vertical supports also made of steel. Thermal and soundproofing insulation is filled into the core of the door. The Locks For doors there are four basic types of locks that operate between several steel locking bolts that extend from the door into the frame. Some require just one key others have two. The combination allows a choice between total closure or partial closure with a spring latch so that staff or children can pass through without a key when the lock is most engaged. All the locks are protected by tempered drill-proof steel defender anchored inside the door. There is a choice of key types: Standard style mechanical keys, electronic door release (digital keypad), fully motorised electronic lock (like a credit card or key fob release) and a biometric key that recognises retinas, finger prints etc). The Hinges and Bolts On the hinge side of the door, apart from two or three heavy-duty adjustable hinges capable of carrying the weight of the door, there are up to five dog bolts that slot into the steel frame as the door closes. This ensures that, when the door is closed and locked, it is secure in both edges as well as the top if this option is selected. Ensure the correct specifications It is essential that the specifications for the door(s) are correct. Key factors include: Inward opening/outward opening Hinges left/Hinges Right Construction of secure side Inside door or outside door Additional door features The doors are always made to precise specification. Normally, they would be fitted with a peephole, door retainer, a soft rubber gasket to prevent dust, draughts and sound and a moveable draught excluder. There are a great many other items that can be fitted as extras: door knobs, door knockers, letter plates, kick plates etc. Customising the appearance The finished security doors are designed to be clad in wood or other materials to compliment the architectural style of the building or the wishes of the resident. There are three basic standards in the UK: ENV1627 (also used across Europe) classifies security doors and windows into 6 classes, Class 1 being the lowest security level and Class 6 being the highest. Classes 5 and 6 are heavy duty products suitable for factories and warehouses. LPS (Loss Prevention Standard) 1175 also has a succession of classes from 1 to 8. SR2 (and SR3) offer an excellent level of security for residential properties. Secured by Design is the UK’s benchmark of security for residential and commercial property and has the approval of the Police and the Association of British Insurers; it takes into account the levels of security achieved when products have been tested. Glass attack resistant classifications The European Committee for Standardisation has a section, EN (or CEN) 1063 to rate glass resistance to firearms: BR1 – BR4 are for different types of hand gun and bullet calibre. BR5 – BR7 are for rifles and a range of bullet calibres There are even higher standards that cover the more extreme attack such as explosions. In the UK, we also have two classifications BS5544 for rating sustained physical attack with hammers, clubs and suchlike. And BS5051 which rates the resistance of glass to ballistic attack. In the past, the higher the classification, the thicker and heavier the glass but these days new materials are used that reduce the necessity for thick glass without affecting visual clarity using a variety of polycarbonate and thermoplastic laminates. Weather Proofing To ensure appropriate weather proofing, as well as ensuring that external panels with the necessary qualities are specified, a range of seals, threshold and water proofing components is available to meet difficult situations.
