Always steer into a skid, keeping full control of the steering wheel and avoid braking hard. If driving on compact ice, a high gear can help tyres grip the ice and improve control. Operate steering and braking as smoothly and slowly as possible, gentle pressure is better than slamming on! Before setting off on your journey ensure you have checked your oil and water, and keep essential items in your car such as snow shovels, blankets, torches etc.
