Over £20K raised for WaterAid

18-09-2013

19 intrepid employees joined Selwood directors Richard Brown and Ian Carter to climb the National Three Peaks on the weekend of 18th May. This involved walking to the top of Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in England and finishing with Mount Snowdon in Wales. Following an early night the party met up at 7.00 Saturday morning fully prepared for the challenge ahead. The worst of the weather was experienced on this first day. It was extremely windy which got worse the higher the party went and resulted in several people being blown over. Visibility was also very poor and from about three quarters of the way up the trekkers had to contend with snow which was 10 feet deep at the top. Next was Scafell Pike in the dark which was the shortest climb but very much the steepest. Climbing through thick fog with the use of head torches, the party eventually broke through the fog at the top to look at the star ridden sky. It was slippery going up and there were a number of fallers so the guides made their way down via a different route although this proved to be equally slippery! A very tired party then made their way to Snowdon which, although not easy, was on paper the easiest of the climbs but after the previous exertions it felt like climbing Everest! Everyone started this final trek on what proved to be a beautiful sunny day with clear blue skies. All were on firm ground by 4.00 in the afternoon on Sunday, a little later than planned, but by then fatigue had really set in and everyone was ready for home. Selwood has accepted an invitation from Wessex Water to be a partner in its Wessex for West Africa 2012/13 initiative. The company has pledged to raise £20K for WaterAid and the target was achieved by this exercise alone. More fund raising activities are planned that will see this target exceeded.
